虽然Athlete的乐队成员都是童年时期的伙伴，但是4个小伙子为了他们共同的音乐事业走到一起还是在2000年的春天。贝司手Carey Willets，主唱兼吉他手Joel Pott，鼓手Steve Roberts和键盘手Tim Wanstall都是来自英国南部的Deptford。前三位队员是在他们14岁时的足球场上认识的，在九十年代末，当他们都刚好二十出头的时候，三人走到了一起组成了乐队，他希望能像Oasis一样成功，还经常在Camden一带演出，那时候也的确有唱片公司对他们表现出兴趣并跟他们接洽。经过一段时间后他们开始对传统的摇滚乐失去了热情，开始尝试实验Indie-Rock曲风的音乐，并且视之为新的音乐方向。于是乐队买了一台十二轨数码录音机，开始玩票性质地对声响进行实验。虽然他们当时已经摸索出了一些声音效果的处理的门道，但乐队缺乏键盘技术而让效果始终达不到理想状态，就在这时键盘手Tim Wanstall 加入，Tim的入伙正好弥补了他们的不足，乐队也正式成为4人组合并改名为Athlete。
这样的一支乐队后来又何以被冠名为“Pavement在英国的答案”，“新Steely Dan”，“The Beta Band的弟弟”等等美誉呢？再后来怎么又老是把他们和Colplay或Starsailor或Keane相比较呢？
Athlete乐队的音乐强调整体性，专辑当中的歌并不是各人带着各人的歌曲走进录音室，而是4人同在一起实验。所以在专辑《Vehicles & Animals》的封套内，词曲作者属名找不到个别成员的名字，而是以乐队整体姿态与歌，Athlete就是一个整体，他们所有的歌曲都是彼此间共同努力的结晶。2003年乐队首张专辑《Vehicles & Animals》发行，虽然谈不上是什么破天惊之作，然而还是见证了乐队在一起的努力和成就。就在专辑发行当年便获得了Meccury Music Prize的提名，虽然最终还是落榜，输给了Dizzee Rascal 的《Boy In a Corner》，但那次的提名还是为Athlete带来了强有力的宣传作用，被提名之后，专辑在短短两个星期内在英国由六万张飚升至十万张销量。
